Welcher ETF konnte in den letzten Jahren mit einer besseren Performance glänzen? Um das herauszufinden, muss man sich den ETFs mit der Lupe nähern. Denn hätte man 2014 1 Millionen € investiert, könnte man heute, im Jahr 2021, mit beiden ETFs auf satte 1,7 Millionen € kommen. Beide Emerging Markets-ETFs haben identische Auf- und Abwärtsbewegungen und doch geht, wenn man genau hinschaut, ein ETF als „Gewinner“ aus diesem Renditevergleich hervor. So hat konstant der iShares Core MSCI EM IMI UCITS ETF USD (Acc) ein wenig mehr Rendite zeigen können. Im laufenden Jahr beispielsweise eine Rendite von 2,87 % im Gegensatz zu 2,27 % des iShares MSCI EM UCITS ETF (Dist).

Sowohl der MSCI EM als auch der MSCI EM IMI haben beide eine fast identische Länderverteilung. Bei beiden ETFs ist China übergewichtet, und zwar mit 36,5 % MSCI EM sowie mit 34,7 % beim MSCI EM IMI. Platz 2 belegt Taiwan mit 13,7 % und 14,5 %. Südkorea folgt dicht danach mit jeweils 13,3 % und 13,8 %. Reihenfolge. So stehen Frankreich und Kanada auf Platz 4 und 5 mit jeweils 3,2 %, gefolgt von der Schweiz (3,1 %) und Deutschland (2,7 %).

Während der iShares MSCI EM UCITS ETF (Dist) 1220 Unternehmen enthält, erweitert sich die sich die Gesamtanzahl beim iShares Core MSCI EM IMI UCITS ETF USD (Acc) auf mehr als das doppelte, nämlich auf 2862 Unternehmen. Damit ist der MSCI EM IMI deutlich breiter diversifiziert.
Ähnlichkeiten finden sich trotzdem zu genüge. So sind unter den größten 40 Unternehmen meist die gleichen Unternehmen bei beiden ETFs vertreten. Auf Platz 1 der 40 größten Unternehmen steht die Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited. Die Firma ist nach Intel und Samsung der weltweit drittgrößte Halbleiterhersteller und der weltweit größte unabhängige Auftragsfertiger für Halbleiterprodukte. Im MSCI EM ist sie mit 6,26 % vertreten, im MSCI EM IMI mit 5,57 %.

Die regionale Aufteilung der beiden ETFs ähnelt sich ebenfalls sehr stark. Am dominantesten vertreten ist Asien. Diese Region teilt sich in der Übersicht noch einmal auf, und zwar einmal in Schwellenländer und einmal in Industrieländer. Asien Schwellenländer ist mit 51,4 % im MSCI EM und mit 50,8 % im MSCI EM IMI vertreten. Asien Industrieländer hingegen mit jeweils 27,5 % und 28,7 %. Danach folgt nach großem Abstand die Region Afrika/Mittlerer Osten mit 8,5 % und 8,4 %. In diesem Prozentanteil befindet sich auch Lateinamerika mit 7,6 % und 7,4 %.

In dieser Grafik wurden zwei Aspekte analysiert: Zum einen wie der Stand der Marktkapitalisierung ist und zum anderen, wie die Unternehmen bewertet wurden.
Bezüglich der Marktkapitalisierung ähneln sich beide Indizes zwar, allerdings kann man trotzdem markante Unterschiede feststellen. Mit 88,9 % beim MSCI EM und 79,3 % beim MSCI EM IMI sind vorrangig große Unternehmen bzw. large caps vertreten. Während es im MSCI EM nur 10,9 % mittelgroße Unternehmen bzw. mid caps gibt, sind im MSCI EM IMI mit 16,5 % deutlich mehr mittelgroße Unternehmen Teil des Indizes. Kleine Unternehmen bzw. small caps sind beim MSCI EM fast gar nicht vorhanden (0,2 %), beim MSCI EM IMI allerdings mit recht sichtbaren 4,1 %.
Rating-Agenturen, in diesem Fall die Rating-Agentur „Morning Star“, legen fest, ob die Unternehmen, die in einem Index enthalten sind, neutral oder aber über- oder unterbewertet sind. Diese Informationen finden sich in dem unteren Teil der Grafik unter dem Begriff „Stil“. Hier sieht man, wie viele Unternehmen prozentual unterbewertet sind (Value, in dunkelblau gekennzeichnet), neutral (Core, in hellblau markiert) oder überbewertet sind (Growth, in hellgrün). An dieser Stelle sind die beiden Indizes nahezu identisch. So besitzt der MSCI EM und auch der MSCI EM IMI am meisten Core-Unternehmen (41,4 % und 40,7 %), gefolgt von Value-Unternehmen (32,3 % und 32,5 %). Das Schlusslicht in beiden Indizes mit immerhin noch 26,3 % und 26,8 % bilden Growth-Unternehmen.

Klar, Rendite ist äußerst wünschenswert, aber das am liebsten nicht bei zu hohem Risiko. Schaut man sich nun die Grafik an, sieht man auf der X-Achse die Volatilität und auf der Y-Achse die Renditeentwicklung und das im Zeitraum vom 01.06.2014 bis zum 31.03.2021. In diesem Vergleich schneidet der iShares Core MSCI EM IMI UCITS ETF USD (Acc) etwas besser als der iShares MSCI EM UCITS ETF (Dist) ab, denn er hat seit 2014 ein wenig mehr Rendite bei weniger Risiko gemacht.

Die von Morning Star zur Verfügung gestellten Scores bewerten, wie nachhaltig der Inhalt eines ETFs ist und nehmen dabei ungemanagte ESG-Risiken in den Fokus. Je kleiner der Wert ist, umso besser steht es um das Zertifikat „Nachhaltigkeit“. Beide hier im Vergleich stehenden ETFs stehen in der Mitte, stechen also nicht durch besonders große Nachhaltigkeit heraus. Während der MSCI EM einen Score von 26,1 aufweist, hat der MSCI EM IMI einen Score von 26,6. Damit ist der iShares MSCI EM UCITS ETF (Dist) eine minimale Spur nachhaltiger als sein Kontrahent, der iShares Core MSCI EM IMI UCITS ETF USD (Acc).

Dieser Inhalts-Vergleich ist besonders spannend, wenn man beispielsweise ein spezifisches Thema im Sinn hat, das man unbedingt ausgeschlossen haben möchte. Schaut man sich die beiden Indizes inhaltlich genauer an, sieht man auch hier deutliche Parallelen. Das Thema „Stammzellen“ sticht sofort ins Auge, denn in diesen Bereich sind beide sehr involviert, der MSCI EM ist hier mit 2,73 % involviert, der MSCI EM IMI mit 2,71 %. Auch das Thema „Kohle“ ist dominant. Der MSCI EM ist mit 1,02 % in Kohle involviert, der MSCI EM IMI etwas mehr mit 1,15 %. Inhaltlich fällt zudem auf, dass beide Indizes deutlicher als in andere Themen in „Alkohol“ involviert sind; hier allerdings der MSCI EM IMI mit 0,99 % etwas weniger als der MSCI EM mit 1,01 %.

Mit diesem Vergleich kann herausgefunden werden, in welchem Maße die Unternehmen des jeweiligen ETFs in fossile Brennstoffe, arktisches Erdöl- und Erdgas, in die Öl- und Gasproduktion bzw. -gewinnung sowie Kraftwerkskohle und -gewinnung involviert sind. Es zeigt sich deutlich, wie sich beide Indizes auch in dieser Sparte ähneln. Am stärksten sind der MSCI EM und der MSCI EM IMI in fossile Brennstoffe involviert, nämlich mit 7,18 % und 6,96 %. Erst weit davon abgeschlagen zeigen sich die anderen Kategorien. So ist mit 4,82 % und 4,48 % die Öl- und Gasproduktion auf Platz 2 und mit 2,86 % und 2,74 % die Öl- und Gasgewinnung auf Platz 3.

Fazit

Dieser Vergleich zwischen dem MSCI EM und dem MSCI EM IMI zeigt, dass die Unterschiede zwischen den Indizen hauchdünn sind. Beide ETFs fokussieren sich auf Emerging Markets. Sowohl der iShares MSCI EM UCITS ETF (Dist) und der iShares Core MSCI EM IMI UCITS ETF USD (Acc) zeigen sehr ähnliche Entwicklungen auf, sei es, wenn es um die Länder- und Regionenverteilung geht oder um die Nachhaltigkeit. Allerdings konnte der iShares Core MSCI EM IMI UCITS ETF USD (Acc) ein wenig mehr Rendite als sein Kontrahent zeigen und schnitt auch im Risiko-Rendite-Vergleich sowie im Maximalverlust-Vergleich besser ab. Nichtsdestotrotz haben sich die beiden ETFs ein hitziges Kopf-an-Kopf rennen geleistet und keiner der beiden konnte eindeutig als „Gewinner“ hervorstechen.
